From 25 November to 7 December, 2024, the WASCAL Competence Centre and GERICS jointly conducted a two-week School, including a one-and-a-half-day Science Policy Dialogue on "Climate Services for Africa: How to Integrate Uncertainties in Decision Making?" at the WASCAL Competence Centre/Hotel Prestige in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso. The content of the training focused on crops, climate modelling and artificial intelligence in climate science. Through these activities, GERICS intensified its support to the development of climate services and capacity building of students and young scientists in the region.

The Science Policy Dialogue provided a platform for knowledge exchange between scientists and policy makers on climate services, with a focus on uncertainties in climate modelling not only in West Africa, but for Africa as a whole. The next WASCAL-GERICS School is planned for late November/early December 2025. Subsequently, Dr Weber and Dr Tamoffo from GERICS conducted a three-day training course on "Introduction to regional climate modelling (EasyREMO) and use of regional climate model data" for students and WASCAL staff at the WASCAL Competence Centre from 9 to 11 December. At the end of the course, the EasyREMO training software was handed over to the WASCAL Competence Centre for further use. The WASCAL-GERICS School, including the Science Policy Dialogue, and the training were part of the capacity building activities and regular scientific exchange of the CICLES project.

CICLES is a joint BMBF-funded project between the WASCAL Competence Center in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso and the Climate Service Center Germany (GERICS) in Hamburg, Germany, with the goal to support the transformation and a sustainable socio-economic development in West Africa.
